As you may recall, last week I mentioned that the Boston City Council was going to hold a hearing into the Archdiocese of Boston’s plans to close parishes. I said at the time that this was a clear instance of government interfering in religious practice and the right of a religious group to order its own affairs.
Well, the council held its hearing last night, the archdiocese didn’t show up, and now there are threats being made. The archdiocese said that since it didn’t know what parishes or schools are going to be closed, then it didn’t make any sense to show up. They did’t add that it’s none of the city council’s business. Meanwhile the politicians are furious.
