That arrested translator

That arrested translator

The local Salem, Mass., newspaper reports that the Egyptian-born, naturalized American translator at Guantanamo Bay who was arrested this week at Boston’s Logan Airport lived in Salem a few years ago. In fact he lived a few streets away. The police department’s designated anti-terrorism officer said he was “aware of” the guy but couldn’t comment further. Odd. But then I realize that about the same time, several of the 9/11 hijackers stayed in Salem for a little while. Is there a connection? Maybe not. But it is sobering to think about.

  • Tom,

I remember after 9/11 reading about where the Boston cell of the hijackers stayed before they made their deadly journey. At least a couple of them stayed at the apartment building on Lafayette Street that’s on the left side as you head south. I don’t know how long they were there or the exact timing. It might not have been right before 9/11 but months or a year before.
