The local Salem, Mass., newspaper reports that the Egyptian-born, naturalized American translator at Guantanamo Bay who was arrested this week at Boston’s Logan Airport lived in Salem a few years ago. In fact he lived a few streets away. The police department’s designated anti-terrorism officer said he was “aware of” the guy but couldn’t comment further. Odd. But then I realize that about the same time, several of the 9/11 hijackers stayed in Salem for a little while. Is there a connection? Maybe not. But it is sobering to think about.
