Jack Kenny of the Manchester Union-Leader takes up a message I’ve been promoting. Why has no one been looking into the role of police, judges, and prosecutors who helped bishops cover up crimes by pervert priests?
- Church leaders have rightly come under fire for not reporting allegations of child sexual abuse to law enforcement authorities, though many of the incidents that have been brought to light during the past year took place before such reporting was required by state law. Yet it appears that in at least some instances, the police response to complaints from parents about priests abusing their children was simply to refer the matter to church authorities.
There has been much justified criticism of bishops and priests who covered up crimes, but is not even more disturbing to find that those who jobs it is to find and prosecute criminals turned a blind eye?
