Philly’s new archbishop

The Vatican announced today that Cardinal Bevilacqua of Philadelphia is retiring and that Archbishop Rigali of St. Louis is his replacement. So much for my prediction that Wuerl would go to Philly. In any case, it is interesting that Rigali will finally get his red hat and title of cardinal.

Traditionally, the arcbishop in St. Louis was named a cardinal, but because of some unhappiness with a previous archbishop that privilege was taken away from the archdiocese. Now Rigali is a friend of the current pope so it was odd that he should suffer in such a way from someone else’s errors, but now it seems that he will eventually get his red hat.
