Outrageous degrees and honors

Outrageous degrees and honors

It’s that time of year again, time for Catholic colleges to invite as commencement speakers people whose views are antithetical orthodox Catholic belief.

Marymount Manhattan College has invited pro-abortion Hillary Clinton to deliver its commencement address and receive an honorary doctoral degree on May 20.

Seattle University, a Jesuit school, has invited pro-abortion Gov. Gary Locke of Washington State to deliver its commencement address and receive an honorary doctoral degree on June 13.

Saint Xavier University in Chicago has invited dissident theologian Sr. Margaret Farley to deliver its commencement address on May 21. Sr. Farley believes that Catholic moral teaching requires embryonic stem cell research and cloning. She’s also pro-abortion and pro-homosexuality and gay marriage. She teaches at Yale University Divinity School, which isn’t Catholic, but a Catholic university is inviting her to speak.

There will be more soon, no doubt. Keep an eye on the Cardinal Newman Society web page for more of this stuff as it arises.

  • I just whipped off three e-mails to the offending presidents—part of my daily “E-mail Warrior” action!

Thanks for the heads-up.  If you could continue to post offending institutions, I can spread the word among my Catholic contacts.  If we don’t change their hearts, we can at least clog up their inboxes!

Ironically, as I understand it the most current scientific research is moving away from embryonic stem cells.  Which would mean that Xavier U. has chosen a speaker who might not actually know what she is talking about.  In more ways than one.

  • Not sure that Marymount Manhattan is a Catholic college.  From http://marymount.mmm.edu/learn/history.html:
“Marymount Manhattan was founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Tarrytown, New York. In 1961, the College was independently chartered and separately incorporated as Marymount Manhattan College.”
Nowhere on their site can I find any reference to the assertion that this is currently a Catholic college.  So, until this is sorted out, e-mails to the President may be counter-productive.
