On the homefront

Miscellaneous President’s Day musings about stuff going on here (although it’s still a work day for me). Feel free to skip over it if you don’t care:

  • The snow is falling. The weatherman says up to 24 inches, although my bet is under 20 here in Salem. I guess that’s a lot, although I’m still hoping for a 30” blizzard.

  • My housemate and landlord and pal Paul G. is in Hawaii today. I hate him. Okay, I don’t hate him, but I am guilty of envy and jealousy. “Father, forgive me…” His niece is getting married this week—she’s native Hawaiian. It was originally going to be scheduled for this summer and I was going to go along just because I’ve never been to Hawaii and I have no problem glomming on to people if a cool vacation is available. Alas, February was a bad time for me. So here I sit, watching snow fall and blow and drift and imagining palm trees and blue seas. I hate him.

  • Lots of home improvements over the past month. The den, a small room at the back of the house with a wood stove went from this:

Then immediately after that was done, they started on the bathroom. Three days, they said. We’d only be without a bathroom (the only one in the house) for three days. Day Six, we had the sink, shower, and john back in action. The worst room in the house to remodel is the bathroom. You can live without the others for a period of time (even the kitchen), but not the bathroom. I’ve seen some home improvement shows where the room remodel takes three months, 6 months, a year! How do they stand it? After four weeks, between the two rooms, I was going crazy. But now we have a great Irish pub-inspired Scotch and cigar room and a bathroom we’re not embarrassed to have people visit and use. So all’s well that ends well and all that. How’d the bathroom come out? It went from this:

All the fixtures are new and they took out the little wall on the right in the “before” photo which opened up the room a lot. The whole thing was ripped down to the studs and sub-floor. To be fair to the workers, the wiring was a rat’s nest and had to be completely replaced and the walls weren’t simply plasterboard, but some kind of cement stuff.

With all the trash sitting in the backyard, I said to Paul that it looked we were living on the Sanford and Sons set. “Coming to Georgia, Elizabeth!” But it’s all gone now (mostly) and the bathroom is done except for a few details. And I have the whole house to myself for 10 days. Ah, quiet.
