O’Malley’s preaching

O’Malley’s preaching

The Boston Globe had nothing to say about the Proud2BCatholic concert over the weekend, but it did find space to analyze Archbishop O’Malley’s preaching ability.

They do get one thing right. He is a very good preacher, as I noted in my post below about his homily at the Mass at the concert. He avoids most of the pitfalls of many bishops, by spending more time pandering to the crowd than preaching the Gospel. He apparently writes his own homilies, in contrast to some bishops who farm out that task to aides. He has a charismatic style that avoids the monotone, but exudes passion and interest.

  • Did you read the homily? There is a message of great importance there and if you didn’t read the whole thing then the point was missed. It is about the clergy not doing their “job”.

I have no idea why Divine Providence would have him speak about this on the same day but it happened. Wierd huh? I don’t think Fr. Weinberger knew in the least what was going on elsewhere that same weekend. He was making a point.

I said, “I am making an ““educated guess”” that the person who Fr. Weinberger isn>NOT!!!

Sometimes reading this blog is like talking with my six year old.
“Daddy, do you see that cat?”
    “Where honey”
    “I’ve got new shoes”
    “When did you get them?”
    “Vanilla is my favorite flavor.”

I’ve been to Mass with the RCAB (Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston) three times this year, and heard him speak live 4 times.

At the Catholic Family Conference, he was so impassioned he pounded the podium and practically shouted (take that you Pentacostals and Evangelicals).

Of course, everytime we leave one of RCAB’s events, we ask ourselves… why don’t we get that every Sunday.

Hey, anyone in the Archd of Boston:  Do you say the Hail Mary after the intercessions at RCAB does?  We don’t.

  • Hey Joe, we don’t say the Hail Mary after intercessions, but we do recite the Angelus after the recessional hymn of the Mass.

I’ve often wondered as well why we can’t get preaching such as Archbishop O’Malley consistently delivers. I first heard him when I was a freshman in DC in 1980 on Good Friday, and it stayed with me ever since.

  • Steve: O’Malley says a Hail Mary after Intercessions EVERY TIME, with a beautiful leading, asking the intercession of our beautiful and spotless Mother.  I am amazed that I haven’t seen the parishes in the Diocese following suit!

Sissy:  If I was heavy in my previous remarks, I apologize.  Please accept.

Lynne:  I think our friend the PEWLADY can answer that.

  • I heard him this past weekend at the Defending the Faith Conference at Franciscan University in Steubenville (very excellent conference, btw).  I thought he was outstanding.  He really got everyone fired up. And he preached the Gospel unabashedly.

  • Hey Sissy:  I registered at Sempre Fi Catholic…  Those homilies are great.

Sorry Joe Soucy, I went off the subject.
