For those of you sitting on the edges of your seats waiting for a motu proprio from Pope Benedict creating a universal indult for the Tridentine Rite or whatever else he has up his sleeve… you can sit back.

As many of us realized upon reflection, it was unlikely that the Holy Father would disrupt the focus of Holy Week by dropping a holy hand grenade like that.  And while it’s not impossible it will happen this week, he is going on vacation for the next few days to Castel Gandolfo, which makes it less likely.

Of course, the fact remains that those who know what’s going on aren’t speaking. All we know now is that something appears to be going on, but we don’t know what exactly it is (despite all kinds of speculation and rumor) and we don’t know when it will be made public. Not very satisfying, but that’s the way it is. We’ll just have to wait.

But I do think something’s going on so don’t get too disappointed.

  • Not only did Holy Week itself make an announcement unlikely (imagine a week of “Intra-Catholic War!” headlines—just what Benedict is looking for, no?) isn’t it quite likely such a universal indult is also a piece of a posssible reconciliation with the Lef. breakaways? And a deal with them could take a lot of patience to work out… .
