New bishops for Boston

New bishops for Boston

Likely by the time most of you read this you will have heard the announcement that Boston has three new auxiliary bishops: Fr. Brian Kiely, the well-regarded pastor of St. Patrick’s in Natick, Mass.; and Msgr. Paul Garrity, currently vicar of the Salem vicariate of the North Region of the archdiocese and serving St. Mary’s parish in Lynn. They didn’t have the third name.

The announcement is being made in Rome on Tuesday morning.

Garrity’s inclusion says to me that he will be be replacing Bishop Frank Irwin, currently auxiliary for the North Region of the archdiocese. My guess is that Kiely will take over the currently vacant post for the South Region and a third will replace Bishop John Boles for the Central region.

The geographical assignments are educated guesses.

Update: Nothing yet. Were my sources premature? Will it come later this week? Next Tuesday? We’ll see. Holy Week would be an odd time for appointments.
