- “I certainly think that he wouldn’t use the term ‘unbecoming’ if he were speaking about a male opponent,” said O’Brien, campaigning with Clinton at a South End health care facility.
What?! Is it too much to ask O’Brien not to behave in an unbecoming way? As her grandmother might have told her, she should act like a lady. In the same way, I expect male politicians to act like gentlemen. What’s wrong with that?
Let’s look at the definition of “unbecoming.” According to Merriam-Webster, it is “not becoming (an unbecoming dress); especially : not according with the standards appropriate to one’s position or condition of life (unbecoming conduct).” (I hate when dictionaries use part of the word in the definition.) The definition of “becoming”: ” suitable, fitting; especially : attractively suitable (becoming modesty).” What’s sexist about that?
It sounds like O’Brien is grasping at straws. Maybe her internal polling shows her falling behind Romney and she’s desparate for some liberal tactic that will take Romney down at the knees. I suspect this attempt will fall flat.
By the way, it is shameful that not one of the five candidates for governor (Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green Party, or independent) is pro-life. Not one. Yuck.
