More on the Boston closings

Here’s some more information about Boston’s church closings. The final report is done and it just needs the formal approval of the Presbyteral Council. I doubt the council will make any changes. They said the final announcement will be made by the end of the month. Hopefully it won’t actually take until the very end of the month, although having it near Pentecost would be symbolic.

The important thing to remember is that this is not just about closing parishes. It is about restructuring, moving resources that are clustered where people used to be, but are no longer, and putting them where people are now. There just isn’t a need for so many parishes so close together in the cities, even as suburban parishes are busting at the seams.

Anyway, the official announcement will come at the end of the month, but as I’ve said before, I suspect we’ll start hearing parish names after May 8 which is when the Presbyteral Council. For a bunch of guys who have to keep the seal of the confessional, a lot of priests in Boston have a hard time keeping secrets.
