Keeler throws out baby with bathwater

We all know that there is a plethora of Catholic voters’ guides out there this election season, many of them taking a tack favoring liberal Catholics, presumably as a reaction to the Catholic Answers Action “Voters Guide for Serious Catholics” that has been so successful over the past couple of election cycles.

Parishes and dioceses are being inundated with all these guides making contradictory claims. Meanwhile, the US bishops have issued a document called “Faithful Citizenship” that is so watered down, just about everybody and nobody is happy with it. There’s hardly anything in there that would challenge either a John Kerry or a George W. Bush.

So with all these competing guides out there, you might think that the bishops would wade into the breach and tell us which ones (or one) accurately reflect the Church’s teachings. Then you’d be wrong. Instead, Cardinal William Keeler of Baltimore, chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, ironically, has said his brother bishops should throw out all the guides, except the bishops’ own milquetoast missive.

As Diogenes said: “And we’re reminded once again of the Vatican II teaching that the role of the laity, in the world of political affairs, is to transform the secular order shut up and listen to the bishops.”
