Grandstanding

A lawyer for a guy suing the auxiliary bishop of Worcester, Mass., was denied his request to depose Bishop Richard Lennon of Boston. The basis for the deposition was that Bishop George Rueger allegedly took the plaintiff to his summer home in Scituate, Mass., a town where Bishop Lennon was pastor for a while.

Lennon’s lawyer is right to say that just because Lennon was pastor there (and I’m not sure they even claim he was pastor at the time the rapes were allegedly occurring) that he would automatically have any knowledge of what other priests are doing in the town. It’s not like priests check in with each other when they travel about.

I think it was just a publicity stunt and a fishing expedition to see what they could dig up. Maybe the lawyer thinks he can gin up another lawsuit. If this is the best he can do for his client, they must not have much of a case.
