Good try, but no excuse

Remember the case of Fr. Donald Ouellette? He is the priest in the Diocese of Worcester, Mass., who is being tried for embezzling $250,000 from his parish. Investigators are looking into whether he gave some of the money to a guy who’s in prison for raping children. At the time, no one could figure out why the priest would give the inmate, William Lamontagne, money.

Now, he suddenly claims he was ordered to visit with Montagne as part of prison ministry. Two problems: the diocese says Ouellette was never assigned to prison ministry, and the Concord prison is not in the Diocese of Worcester. And even if it were true, it doesn’t explain why he was giving money to an inmate. Is that some new ministry?
