  • Since the Moderator,Bishop Lennon, did nothing to stop Fr. Walter Cuenin from bringing his parishioners from OLHC in to the Pride Interfaith Coalition honoring service in 2003 when Bishop Gene Robinson was honored for his work in advancing gay marriage, will Fr. Richard Erikson who is the new Moderator, show more courage and stop Fr. Cuenin from receiving and preaching at the June 10 Boston Pride Service where he will be honored for his work in advocacy for the GLBT agenda? Bay Windows issue of 2/02/06 article:“Catholic priest to preach at Boston Pride Interfaith Service” by Laura Kiritsy, reports that Fr. Cuenin “will be honored for his work by the Pride Interfaith Coalition….Cuenin will also preach at the service.”

In 2003, Archbishop O’Malley(now Cardinal) sent the information from the OLHC bulletin announcing Fr. Cuenin’s intention to bring parishioners to the service to honor Bp. Gene Robinson, to Bishop Lennon in the expectation that Bp. Lennon would take action on the issue. Bishop Lennon did not. Will the new Moderator,Fr. Erikson, act to prevent this scandal this year? The article states:“We look for people that have contributed in a positive way to the advancement of the GLBT issues within the religious community.” This heresy must be stopped!

  • Alice—I’m in complete agreement re: the heresy of “advancement of GLBT issues.”

However, if Fr. Erickson is not “in place” as Vicar General until June 15 (which is when he says he expects to be released by the military), how can he possibly be expected to prevent an event on June 10?

Perhaps your question should be directed to Cardinal O’Malley.

  • Fr. Jim Clark,  Thanks for the information about when Fr. Erikson will be “in place”. I have already sent Cardinal O’Malley a letter and copy of the Feb. 2,2006 Bay Windows article about the GLBT honoring Fr. Cuenin service and received a reply from Fr. Kickham acknowledging that it was received. Fr. Kickham’s letter also stated:“Please know that Cardinal O’Malley is initiating a new dimension of the Courage/EnCourage program in the Archdiocese of Boston. Our priests have been invited to attend informational sessions concerning the program and the Cardinal has appointed a pastor Chaplain/Coordinator for these groups…. We join you in a commitment to go forward in faith and to promote the truth.”
My hope is that there will be many priests who will attend the sessions and will openly support Courage/EnCourage and tell parishioners about it. I believe that the best theological foundation for this program is The Theology of the Body and I know that there are a number of study programs dedicated to the Theology of the Body going on in the Boston Archdiocese, especially at St. Clement’s Eucharistic Shrine in Boston where there are young adults(20-35) who are showing a great interest. It would be great if parishioners learned about these efforts! Unfortunately they too often only hear about PFLAG,GLBT,Gay Pride,MassEquality, etc. through the news media.
