Copyrighting Mother Teresa’s name

Copyrighting Mother Teresa’s name

The Missionaries of Charity want to copyright Mother Teresa’s name. They will also include the order’s logo and name. It seems that in India some businesses, including a bank and a business school, are trying to capitalize on soon-to-be-blessed Teresa’s name and reputation. I wonder if you could do the same thing here in the US. Could one open the Buddy Hackett Bank or Katharine Hepburn School of Management without getting permission from the estate’s? Could their estates copyright (or isn’t it trademark?) their names?

  • The bank is an interesting idea.  I boggled when I first saw St. Mary’s Bank (La Caisse Populaire Ste-Marie) on the west side of Manchester.  Similarly, you can get your checks from the Ste. Jeanne d’Arc Credit Union in Lowell.
