Boston College approves gay group

Boston College, which for years resisted pressure, has okayed an official gay student group. Okay, they say it’s not a “gay group,” but a “group devoted to issues of sexual orientation.” I’d appreciate it if anyone can give me a plausible explanation of the difference.

The group is called “Allies at Boston College,” and its constitution “forbids contradicting church or school positions on homosexuality.” I’ve heard of Allies at other Catholic colleges, and let’s just say that they feel no compunction about contradicting Church teaching. It’s like the “Women’s Center” at Boston College. They’re not supposed to refer students to abortion clinics, and they don’t ... officially. But it happens unofficially.

Even if Allies abides by the rules for a while, it’s like letting the camel’s nose under the tent flap. Pretty soon the whole camel will be inside and Allies will be a full-fledged gay activist group.

The Boston Herald article says: “Before BC’s move, 17 of the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges had approved similar student groups, according to a report in the Chronicle of Higher Education.” Now there’s a shameful statistic if I’ve ever seen one.
