Boston Catholic Charities stopping adoptions

Boston Catholic Charities stopping adoptions

Catholic Charities Boston has announced it will stop doing adoptions because of the state law requiring they place kids with gay couples. (It doesn’t say that exactly, but how else can the non-discrimination requirement be interpreted?) All adoptions will end when its state contract ends at the end of June. Kudos to Archbishop O’Malley if indeed he was the one who put his foot down and said No.

  • Between this and the S.F announcement below, I cant figure out what our strategy is?
I’m glad we are drawing a line and wont be pushed around at all. However, is their farther to go, (lawsuits ect.) What about the exemption we were going to get?
I’m not saying I wont die on this Hill. I’m just saying adoption is an important charity (helps give alternatives to abortion) & is a business we want to stay in.

Anybody got a guess about were we go next?
    Religious freedom lawsuits? Supreme Court?
    Mass, and Calf Legislature?

(what about the solid point that women are less likely to put their children up for adoption, if they think they wont be going to good traditional homes?)
(Fathers who sign away their rights also, don’t want homosexuals raising their son or daughter)

    What are our options?

  • So are there any Catholic adoption agencies in MA now?  Adoption and orphaneges used to be a very Christian effort, aiming at both physical and spiritual nourishment.  Is it now a roll of the dice to determine what kind of religious household an adoptee might be placed in?

  • This is an abdication of their responsibilities as Catholics.

The problem is not resolved once Catholic Charities is no longer in violation of their own Catholic principles.  Children will, as a result of this decision, continue to be placed in situations of “grave harm” but just by someone else.  How is that a fine decision.  It is an abdication.

In my opinion, the correct solution is not to look at evil and say, “I will not participqate in it.” Rather, the proper moral approach is to determine what is correct and true and pursue that.  Is Catholic Charities no longer interested in the best interests of the children????  Why????  Or are they saying that since they will not be placing the Children, that is in the best interests of the children?  It makes no sense.

The truth is that same-sex adoption is not in the best interests of the children; indeed it is the exact opposite “causing grave harm.” Same-sex adoption should be fought vehemently by the Church; in order to prevent this grave harm.  Should we say, for example, well we are not participating in the genocide (wherever it happens) so that is good, or should we say, genocide is wrong and we are against it and will do everything in our power to prevent it from causing damage?

As father Corapi said.  We, here in Massachusetts, are in the war zone.  Why are we waiving a white flag.  How does that do any good.  All that getting out of the harmful business does is prevent a scandal about whether Catholic Charities will or will not be engaged in actions that directly contradict their Catholic beliefs.  BUT, if it truly is an action that directly contradicts our beliefs, we ought to be standing up and fighting for our beliefs.  Acquiescence is not a moral stance.  This is terrible.

State law is no excuse.  This state law must be fought because it is a direct violation of our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO FREELY EXERCISE OUR RELIGION.  IF WE DO NOT FIGHT FOR THIS RIGHT WE WILL LOSE IT.

  • So orphaned children are forced by their government to live by bread alone.  Astonishing.  I hadn’t realized adoption had become so completely secular.
