Bl. Gianna Molla

The Vatican announced decrees of canonization and beatification on Saturday, including the canonization decree of Bl. Gianna Molla.

For those unfamiliar with her cause, she was an Italian doctor and mother who was diagnosed with a tumor when she was pregnant with her fourth child and died in 1962 rather than undergo any procedure that would have aborted her child. She had morally allowable options that would have allowed her to live even though her baby would have died. Instead, she took the harder road, risking her own life on behalf of her child’s. What an excellent example of a modern woman, a doctor, a wife, and a mother.
