The largest diocesan sex abuse settlement has been approved by the presiding judge. The Diocese of Covington, Kentucky, will pay out $120 million. Forty million will come from diocesan assets, and the diocese and victims will sue two insurance companies for the rest. It’s not clear from the article what will happen if that prosecution is unsuccessful.
The judge initially balked at the deal because of that uncertainty over the remaining 80 million, so I wonder what the various lawyers told him to reassure him and get his approval.
