Anti-war loonies

A lawyer is filing suit on behalf of his teenage son and daughter and three friends against the Selective Service registration law. The lawsuit contends that it is unconstitutional for the law to only require men to sign up for a possible draft, but their real intention is have Selective Service regisration struck down altogether. I love how he puts it:

He said a broader motivation is to spur debate “about the possibility of a draft and of having suburban kids being shipped across the world to fight a war.”

Because it would be better if only urban kids got shipped across the world to fight a war? Now, if confronted with his choice of words, I bet Attorney Harvey Schwartz would deny racism, but perhaps it was an unconscious impulse. Dr. Freud, your slip is showing.

Schwartz said the seeds of the lawsuit were sown about six months ago at his family dinner table in Ipswich when his 18-year-old son, Samuel, bemoaned the fact he had to register, and 17-year-old stepsister Nicole Foley rejoiced at not having to do so.

Then Dad reminisced about the time he burned his draft card and all the good pot he used to smoke. Mom recalled the better days when she didn’t have to shave her legs and how she used to run around with flowers in her hair.

Sounds like a new Fox special: “When Hippies Have Kids.”

“The discrimination is kind of in favor of women,’’ [Nicole] said yesterday. “But this is kind of an ethical thing. If you say women have the same rights as men, you’re going to have to take the good with the bad.”

Kind of.

I think all lawyers who don’t have enough to do except file frivolous lawsuits should be rounded up to pick up trash on the highways. At least they’d be doing a public service.
