A Roman spectacle in Boston

The Italian-Americans grandmothers and grandfathers protesting the closing of their church in East Boston made it onto live television in Rome last week, and they think it may have an impact with their case to the Vatican to stay open. I don’t think so.

As you might expect, it was an emotional and passionate display with little “nonas” proclaiming their impending death if their church is closed. It makes for good TV, but a poor argument. The claim that the closing is anti-Italian discrimination is patently idiotic. What about all the other churches, i.e. almost all of them, that don’t have a predominant Italian population.
