| This battlecruiser is an unusual ship design for Starfleet, but she was built to occupy a niche between exploration ships like the Galaxy Class and the aging ships serving defensive roles, such as the Excelsior Class. The Akira Class is extremely well-armed; with an impressive array of torpedo tubes and carrying two squadrons of fighters, she can stand up against just about any known ship in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. An interesting item is the class's through-deck hangar bay, allowing it to launch fighters from the front while recovering them aft or vice versa. In a pinch, the ship could carry up to 60 fighters the size of the Viper in its hangars or even more shuttlecraft to help in an evacuation, for example.
However, the Akira Class is not just a combat warship and contains limited science labs and is often called upon for dealing with local crises and other matters, freeing up the exploration vessels for their primary roles. The Timberwolf saw action in various battles during the Dominion War. Afterward, she was rotated back through the shipyards, along with most of the Fleet over the next few years, for repair and refitting. Many of her systems were upgraded, including a completely new bridge module that was first deployed on the Sovereign-Class USS Enterprise. Unfortunately, time and assets did not allow for the photon torpedos to be replaced with the quantum variety, a change that would have increased combat power dramatically. The ship has recently been assigned to the region near the Romulan neutral zone. |
