James Carroll, a columnist for the Boston Globe and a liberal former priest, opines on the phenomenon of an alleged apparition of Mary appearing in the window of a local hospital. A double-paned window or whatever has leaked and moisture and chemicals inside have formed what appears to some to be an image of the Virgin and Child.
Carroll’s point seems to be that Marian apparitions throughout history have been concocted by popes, politicians, and conquistadores to make their pronouncements palatable to a gullible population. Of course, Carroll sees something nefarious and political in everything the Church does, in line with his longstanding opinion that the Church is not a divine institution, but a political body.
I don’t think they do have a web page. At least not one I could find.
Today’s Gospel reading speaks about false prophets…you know, “wolves in sheep’s clothing” and all. And “by their fruits you shall know them.”
Well, the celebrant at Mass today lives in Milton. And, naturally, he went to see the window. And do you know…while he doesn’t know what to make of it, he did hear a lady, upon seeing it, say to her friend something like “Oh, my God…I’ve been away from the Church for a long time. I’m going to confession.”
I don’t know if this comes from God or not…but I’m thinking maybe God uses stuff like this to bear fruit?
