Dry weather = brush fires

Dry weather = brush fires

On my way to work this morning, I drove through a choking haze of smoke. I couldn’t see any fire trucks or obvious source, but I think this was it: “Brush blazes keep North of Boston firefighters hopping”. What is this, southern California?

Here’s an explanation:

Last month was one of the most driest Augusts on record in Salem and elsewhere North of Boston.

“Most driest”? Later the reporter writes: “Gaining to that fire was extremely difficult, said Salem fire Deputy Chief Brian Harrington.” Gaining. Do you mean “getting”?

I could do a whole blog just about grammatical, typographical, and editing errors in major newspapers and magazines.

Anyway, it doesn’t look like we have any major rain in sight, although we might get a big storm later his week. I guess when it rains, it pours.
