Out and proud at Boston College

Out and proud at Boston College

A group of openly homosexual and lesbian professors at Jesuit-run Boston College held a forum last night and decried the Catholic school’s “deeply rooted religious tradition.” Yes, they don’t like the fact that the institution for which they chose to work is Catholic. I’m sorry, but have we legalized slavery and indentured servitude when I wasn’t looking?

If someone I knew went to work for say, Raytheon, the fifth-largest defense contractor in the US, and then complained that they “have a long way to go before overcoming the [company’s] deeply rooted [military-industrial complex] tradition,” I dismiss them as a fool for failing to recognize reality before taking the job.

That is, unless I found out that Raytheon’s recruiter’s had made representations that the company really didn’t buy all the military/defense baloney and that they could expect an atmosphere friendly to pacifists and after all they expect big changes to eventually come in the basic beliefs of the company any day now.

Then I would blame the recruiters and the pacifist employees.

Though it has recently been recognized for accepting increasingly diverse viewpoints, BC’s affiliation with the Catholic Church, which officially condemns homosexuality, often puts the institution at odds with gays and lesbians on campus and has prompted past efforts by the university to discourage or prohibit gay-themed organizations, they said.

Which leads me to ask why they ever believed it would be different?

Accounting professor Theresa Hammond, who has taught at BC for 17 years, said the university is still bound by old ways, citing a December 2005 incident in which BC administrators canceled a student-organized Gay-Lesbian dance.

“You think you belong, but then things like that happen,” Hammond said. “It’s a mixed place.”

But why was the dance cancelled? The college’s spokesman said that it was because it was not open to all students but was advertised as being for gay students, and that they did not seek permission to hold the dance. They also expressed concern that it was not merely a fundraiser for an AIDS charity, but promoted the homosexual lifestyle. With the theme “A Night in Gay Paris”, I don’t wonder. You also have to understand the history of such events at BC. In years past they have been the scene of some extremely vulgar debauchery; just check back issues of the independent campus newspaper The BC Observer from the early 90s.

But back to last night’s event, the organizers say they are hopeful for the future since there are growing numbers of openly gay and lesbian professors on campus. Does that mean they believe they’re overcoming the school’s “deeply-rooted religious tradition?”

  • The minute these professors trash the roots and base of the institution they are getting their paycheck from, but refuse to resign, you know there is a real integrity problem among them.

  • The person who claims responsibility for organizing the LGFSAA organization is Boston College Theology Professor
John McDargh. He demands spousal benefits for faculty members who are in same-sex ‘marriages’. He defined the LGFSSA’s mission statement in “BC faculty band together to promote change”, in a Bay Windows article by Laura Kiritsy,6/3/04, as follows:“the group aims to create a safe and supportive professional environment for all GLBT employees at B.C.. The LGFSSA is a professional organization that serves as a resource and advocacy group for these employees and their families.”
One of the courses he teaches is TH261″Spirituality and Sexuality” in which the students explore:“How does our experience of ourselves as sexual beings open us to the experience of the holy, and conversely, how might our desire for God be intimately related to our sexual desire and longings? These are the questions that will be the focus of our work. Not a course on sexual ethics, this course is an exploration of the complex interrelationship of sexual and spiritual desire as both are reflected upon in Christian spiritual tradition.”
He is quoted as having said:“We cannot understand fully what compels human beings to seek after that which they name ‘God’ until and unless we understand something about our relationship to our teddy bears.”
Any students who spend their precious time studying with John McDargh when they could be learning the real truth about the Trinitarian relationship of the God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, such as they would learn in studying The Theology of the Body by Pope John Paul II, is truly being deceived by the person(s) who chose John McDargh to teach Theology at Boston College.
He is also teaching in Session 2,Summer 2007, in the Boston College Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry which is advertised in The Pilot on a regular basis.
Is it any wonder that he and his like-minded professors at Boston College are succeeding in undermining the Catholic
faith of the students who attend their classes?

  • Please pray for Boston College and all of us here trying to spread the Gospel.

To quote the holiest man I ever met (who just left BC after getting his disseration to be a missionary),

“Jesus Christ is the Savior of (Boston College).  And there is no movement, tendency, or other power that ultimately withstands the Light of His Grace.  This grace is invincible and eventually irresistible.  Please do pray that we weak ones who are called to witness to this grace can be so purified, so blessed, so impoverished, and so engulfed in the flame of His love for these people, that He can bear fruit in the manner that He desires…and that we can labor without the need to always see the fruit of our hands…that we can love His people and the lost sheep enough to give everything, even our entire selves, imagining that the fruit of our planting may emerge only after we are gone.”  He added:

“It seems like this is a good stance for a priest who belongs to Jesus Christ.”

    So, yes, please pray.

  • “since there are growing numbers of openly gay and lesbian professors on campus”

You bet, and the number will continue to grow.  This network never gives up, never overlooks a detail, and never forgets.
