The Holy Father appointed Archbishop Edwin Frederick O’Brien, military ordinary for the U.S.A., as metropolitan archbishop of Baltimore (area 12,430, population 3,055,477, Catholics 517,679, priests 545, permanent deacons 178, religious 1,380), U.S.A. He succeeds Cardinal William Henry Keeler, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.
As an O’Brien, I heartily applaud the Holy See’s elevation to metropolitan of yet another of my clansmen. All allegations of a world domination plot should be ignored, of course….

Excellent choice. Archbishop O’Brien was a rumored name to succeed Cardina Law prior to the announcement of Cardinal O’Malley. It’s good to see O’Brien put in such an important post afterall.

Maureen - such a plot for world domination (by either your clan or we Irish in general), if extant, would be doomed to failure, I’m afraid. My father said that’s why God made beer….

I wish the incoming archbishop well, but I must admit that I will miss the retiring incumbent. I’ve been a fan of his since his days as the second string mitred head here in Harrisburg. With a little luck he may decide to return here in retirement.

Thanks be to God. Bishop O’Brien will be missed here but Baltimore needs a tough man.
