God is good to this fan of 24

It would be wrong to say that my guardian angel or the Holy Spirit really cares whether I watch the TV show “24”. Yet, I will happily thank the Lord for small gifts of unimportant things.

I’m the happy owner of a Tivo—a device which ensures that I actually watch less TV and that the TV doesn’t manage my time, but instead I manage it—and among the shows on the “season pass” is “24”, the action-packed thrilling adventures of federal counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer. Unfortunately, the way the season pass feature of the Tivo works, you must rank your shows such that when two shows are on at the same time on different channels, the Tivo knows which one to record. That’s been fine all season—until the Sci-Fi Channel decided to move “Stargate Atlantis” reruns to Monday night. For some reason, SG:A was listed higher than 24 and thus ... you guessed it, no 24.

For most shows, I’d shrug and wait for the rerun. However, 24 is a real-time show, i.e. the season depicts 24 hours over 24 episodes. Miss one hour and that episode is a loss. Grrr. Now if this had been “Lost” or one like it, I would have gone to the iTunes Music Store and paid $1.99 to legally download a copy of the missing episode. But the Fox network has been obstinate lately in declaring it would not offer shows for download ... until now.

Yep, that’s right. As of today, Fox is selling episodes of the current season of “24” on the iTunes Music Store, along with a bunch of their other shows.

Okay, it’s not a big deal, at least not of the “Pope Benedict declares a universal indult!“ variety, but it’s still kind of cool, and it makes me happy. And that’s good because if you ask Melanie, I was not happy last night when I realized the Tivo had not recorded “24”. It’s not a big deal, but still God is good even in the little, unimportant things.

I like “The Shield.“

Dom,

I have an ASL class at Northeastern University every Monday night from 5:50 to 7:30 pm.  After class ends, I run down to Ruggles and take the 7:53 commuter rail train out of Ruggles and arrive at Canton Junction at 8:12.  I drive 20 minutes from Canton to North Easton and usually have time to take off my shoes, put on a pair of shorts, and make myself a PB&J sandwich with a tall glass of milk.

I love that show.

Stargate Atlantis?!?!? Bumping 24 for Stargate Atlantis is like standing up Grace Kelly to date Phyllis Diller! Ugh!

We have Tivo too (how did we live so long without it?!) but 24 is the only show my husband and I watch together (except for the occasional Yankee game on YES network).

cool smile

I do not know what you are talking about. I do not watch TV and I am so happy when I can sit down a read a good, thought-provoking book.

Living on the West Coast, there is a built-in delay. So I read Dave Barry’s blog on 24.

What a hoot! Especially Steve’s recap after the show.

Then when I watch, I laugh like crazy as I recall the comments.

I offer my dittos on the Dave Barry blog—painfully funny.  The AsthmaSonic 2000 missile reference still has me chuckling.

Jvparis: I’m thrilled for you, but why bother to say anything? I’ve noticed that some people who don’t watch TV act as if they look down on those of us who do with a hint of smug self-righteousness. Better if you had remained silent on this.

Incidentally, I also enjoy many good, thought-provoking books.
