Even when it’s not a priest, the priesthood gets smeared

The head of the Catholic healthcare system in Boston has been reprimanded by Cardinal Sean O’Malley for sexual harassing female employees. I’ve a bit behind on the news and am trying to get caught up, but I noticed something strange in the news coverage.

The Associated Press news coverage puts this headline on the story: “Sex Charges Leveled Against Boston Priest.” I know that this standing head is sitting in some AP editor’s Microsoft Word macros, but Haddad is not a priest and nowhere in the story is he identified as a priest. The priesthood gets a bad enough rap without having to make things up. I hope the AP and every newspaper that ran the headline (I’ve seen it on the Houston Chronicle‘s site as well) run a correction.

Ed: What do you mean? Did this story get noticed somewhere? Credit for the AP correction goes to Fr. Carr who did the phone calling. I simply posted it on the blog.

Thanks for nice words. I’m glad you’re on our side too.
