Canned reality is unreal ... and a publicity stunt
A few days ago I mentioned a debate over what some said was a real girl—the daughter of repressive and religious homeschooling parents—posting surreptitious video diaries on YouTube. I maintained that it couldn’t be real, basing it on certain articles and the fact that the videos were just too “produced” to have been created in a teenage girl’s bedroom. Others want to remain optimistic and believe the sweet, innocent girl was real.
Sorry folks. Today’s New York Times reveals the truth: Teenaged “Bree” is a twentysomething New York film school graduate and actress.
The woman who plays Lonelygirl15 on the video-sharing site YouTube.com has been identified as Jessica Rose, a 20-ish resident of New Zealand and Los Angeles and a graduate of the New York Film Academy. And the whole project appears to be the early serialized version of what eventually will become a movie.
oh boy! A movie about repressive, religious homeschooling parents. No doubt some sort of conservative Christians. Oh, if only the poor dear can break free of the rules and experience all the sensual pleasures of adolescence on her terms without consequences and all the rest of that claptrap packaged up and sold to our kids.
Sheesh, Tim, I just saw your comment about getting fired. I’m sorry to heard that. If they said they fired you for viewing Catholic sites, but said it would have been okay if you were viewing other sites, then I think you have a clear case of religious discrimination and viewpoint discrimination. You should contact a lawyer specializing in labor disputes.

I only saw one or two clips, but I thought lonelygirl was annoyed at her boyfriend’s gruff indifference/hostility to her unspecified religion.

She’s obviously of college age; it figures that people suspected this was phony from the start.
The Wikipedia page about this little fad mentions references to satanism in the videos.
